Mr & Mrs N decided on a renovation of their home for several reasons. They had lived in this house for 20 years and did not want to move. They know everyone around them and are very active in community groups. And they love their house. However, visits from their adult children and grandchildren had become problematic. The original design had the bathroom located next to the front door and the only space for changing was the living room. In addition, as is common in many old Japanese houses which are connected to neighbouring houses, the walls had rats and other vermin running through them which worried them a lot.
They decided that renovation of their house would be better than rebuilding so that they could maximise their space. It is a very narrow lot.
To renovate we removed all inner walls, ceilings and floors. We designed a floor plan that gave them a very spacious living area downstairs and a hidden bathroom. Upstairs we arranged for separate sleeping areas and managed to design in a loft for when their visitors popped in.
Their new home although the same size seems much more spacious and is definitely easier to use as a family.
